The Rev'd Stephen Gibbs

I grew up in Perth as the oldest child in a family of four children and was educated here.  I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Psychology from the University of Western Australia in 1980, then completed a Graduate Diploma in Education there. After some time travelling to Scandinavia and Europe I began a three and one half year period of working as a school psychologist with the Education Department of WA in both the city and country. Most of 1985 was spent on pilgrimage to the Middle East including several months travelling around Israel and living on Kibbutz in northern Galilee.  While there I had a renewed calling to the priesthood.

When I returned home I was accepted into the ordination programme for the Anglican Diocese of Perth, graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Divinity and was subsequently ordained deacon and then priest in 1989.

I was assistant Chaplain at the University of Western Australia for a brief period while waiting to take up appointment as Assistant Curate at South Perth Parish. I then served as Precentor of St George's Cathedral. My next clerical appointment was Rector of the Parish of York.  In 1996 I was appointed Rector of Roleystone.  Throughout my ministry I have had a strong interest in faith development through helping people explore different approaches to spirituality, theological study and offering spiritual direction.  I have co-led workshops and study groups on spirituality and various areas of Christian faith. Developing Christian community life is a high priority area of ministry.

I have maintained a strong interest in psychology and the interface between psychology and spirituality while continuing ministry as a priest. I commenced studying for the degree of Master of Clinical and Health Psychology at Curtin University on a half time basis in 2001. Some of my key areas of interest are the psychology of hope and optimism and the impact of deeply held beliefs on personality and behaviour.

I have two daughters, Kathleen and Louise.  I am a lover of music and listen to and perform in various styles ranging from classical music through to pop and jazz.  Cooking is also a hobby, along with walking, movies and dining out with friends.

I look forward to joining you as part of this Christian faith community, and sharing ministry with you.

The Rev'd Stephen Gibbs was appointed Rector of Floreat Park in August 2003 and took up office on February 1, 2004.
